George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Elijah McClain are just a few names that come to mind when I hear B.L.M. I’ve attended a protest in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, but, I wanted to strengthen my support for the black community. I want to use my business and platform to help support the B.L.M movement. Protesting is a great way to exercise your rights and to fight for the injustice that is going on in American right now, but so is supporting Black-owned businesses in your area.
By supporting Black-owned businesses you help close the racial wealth gap that has been going on for decades as results from racial inequality such as legally mandated segregation in schools and job discrimination. By supporting Black-owned businesses you are helping create more opportunities for Black Americans, as well as create black generational wealth.
My husband and I decided that a great way to show support within our area is to go to and support Black-owned Businesses in the Woodbridge, VA area. So we began googling for Black-owned businesses in Woodbridge, VA area, but we were faced with several challenges. No one had a complete list to go off of, as well as some places weren’t confirmed as a Black-owned business. I believe that someone should be able to google Black-owned restaurants in their area and have a completed, verified list of the Black-owned restaurants pop up.
With my knowledge of this, I knew I had to do something to make it easier to help support Black-owned businesses rather it be from restaurants to landscaping companies. It did not sit right with me that finding Black-owned businesses were a challenge to find and support. I began doing tons of research on businesses in the Woodbridge, VA area trying to figure out which are Black-owned businesses and which were not. I contacted some of the businesses personally to make sure all the information I gathered about their business was correct. The list that I ended up creating is not a completed list but it is definitely a great starting point. I hope everyone is able to use my list of Black-owned businesses to help grow their support in the black community.
